Living Your Truth: Who Are You?

Living Your Truth: Who Are You?

By: Melissa English

The words on the wall at the Temple of Delphi were pretty straight forward, "Know Thyself",  However, in an age when we are bombarded with images, media, news, and constantly saturated with ideas from society, how many of us can really say that we know ourselves?

Those two words scratched in stone on the wall of the Oracle are a testament to all things true in this world.  If you do not know yourself, how can you aid and assist others?  How can you live a fulfilled and happy life?  When you wander aimlessly through the halls of time you will finally wake up one day and you will realize that you let all the time pass in the world and you never knew yourself.  In your last few moments on this earth, you want to know that you did everything you could, loved all of those you could and touched as many lives as you could.

However, in order to know what your purpose is, you must first know who you are! Have you decided to really take that on and discover who you are?  When you were a child and you looked in the mirror who did you expect you would be?  When you see the person staring back at you now is it the same person?  Did you always want to be an actor, a writer, a teacher, a pilot?  There is not time like the present to change your course and to live the life you have always dreamed of.

When you think back in 40 years, do you want to think about the fact that you lived doing a job that you hated?  You sat is a cubicle and stared at a wall?  Or did you want to get out in the world and travel, and see all of the beauty which exists beyond the four walls of an office?  Life is pretty boring day in and day out when you are stuck in an office, Officespace anyone?  I think we have all had that experience, and know what that is like.  When you think about you, though, what was the one thing that you do that makes you a thousand times better than everyone else?  When you think about it, there is something, some hidden gem that exists within you that will allow you to dominate and destroy the competition because it is your innate talent.  That thing, whatever it is, is your purpose.

What if you have no idea what that one thing is?  Get started trying to find your true passion, if you have imagined yourself as a dancer, go dance, if you want to learn to write, pick up a pen.  There is nothing to stop you from doing everything you want other than yourself.  People always say that there are only 24 hours in a day and that everyone has the same amount of time.  That is absolutely true, some people are merely better at organizing themselves.

Consider what it is that you want to do, do that one thing well.  We cannot be masters of everything that we put our hands to, however, we can be a master at a few things.  Find that one thing and do it well, and know yourself.  Only by truly learning who you are, your passions, your desires and everything associated with them will you be able to live the impassioned and blazing life which you deserve.  It is time to get started!
